How does the Didsbury Repair Café day work?

A friendly step‑by‑step guide for anyone visiting Didsbury Repair Café for the first time. If you like to know what will happen before you arrive, this page is for you.  Dates and find us

1. Can I just turn up, or do I need to book?

There’s no need to book. Simply come along during our 2-4pm session times with your item. You don’t have to know what’s wrong with it - curiosity is welcome.

When you arrive, one of our volunteers will greet you, say hello, and help you get settled. If you’re feeling nervous, that’s completely normal - it's most people's first time. We’re a friendly bunch. Hopefully we'll even have a brew and a cake for you.

2. What happens when I arrive?

Before we start, we’ll ask you to fill out a short piece of paperwork disclaimer. It’s standard for all repair cafés and just explains:

  • We’ll do our best, but repairs aren’t guaranteed
  • You’ll be involved in the repair
  • You understand we’re volunteers, not a commercial service

It only takes a minute, and we’re happy to help if forms aren’t your favourite thing.

3. What happens when I bring my broken item?

Once you’re signed in, we’ll find a volunteer who knows about your type of item - whether it’s a lamp, a bike, a toy, or a piece of clothing.

You’ll sit together, have a chat, and take a look at what’s going on. This is a relaxed, hands‑on part of the repair café experience. You’re welcome to watch, learn, or get involved.

4. Will you fix my item on the day?

Most repairs are simple: a loose wire, a stuck zip, a wobbly screw, a flat tyre. We’ll talk through what we’re doing and explain anything you want to know. Bring along anything you think might help with the fix.

Sometimes things can be fixed on the spot. Sometimes they can’t - and that’s okay. Even diagnosing the problem helps reduce waste and keeps useful items in circulation.

5. What if my item needs a replacement part?

If your item needs a replacement part - a bulb, a fuse, a zip, a bike cable - we’ll help you figure out exactly what you need and where to get it.

You can then:

  • Fix it yourself at home
  • Or bring it back next time with the new part

Either way, you’ll understand your item better and feel more confident about repairing things in future.

6. What is it like at the Didsbury Repair Café?

Repair Café Didsbury is a calm, friendly space in a church hall, welcome to all. People chat, share tips, drink brews, eat biscuits and celebrate small wins. You’ll see neighbours helping neighbours and volunteers showing visitors how to fix things instead of throwing them away.

It’s community repair at its best - simple, sustainable, and surprisingly uplifting.

7. What happens if you can't fix my item?

If your item is repaired, brilliant - that’s one less thing heading to landfill. If it isn’t, you'll know you tried at least. You’ll still leave with:

  • A better understanding of what went wrong
  • Advice on next steps
  • The option to return with a part
  • And the knowledge that you tried, learned, and contributed to a more sustainable South Manchester
